Can Austin musicians apply?

Yes—musicians are included. Austin’s current ACME funding guidelines define an individual artist to include musicians, and the Nexus page accepts individual artists and arts groups applying directly or with a fiscal sponsor. An applicant must be at least 18 and live or be based in the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area for the grant period.

Nexus adds several important filters: no more than $150,000 in annual operating expenses, at least one year of documented creative production in Austin, and a creative mission rooted in producing arts and culture activities. The funded public activity must take place in Austin or its extraterritorial jurisdiction and be open and advertised to residents, visitors and tourists.

A record, video or performance can be part of a strong proposal, but the published criteria reward a clear public connection. The City asks whether the work is made for a specific audience or community and whether the project is accessible and invites people to experience it. Grant-funded activities also carry tourism-marketing requirements.

For a musician, that points toward a complete public project: for example, a locally produced release paired with an Austin performance, a community-facing concert series, or a collaborative music program with a defined audience. The application should explain who will encounter the work, where that encounter happens and why the project belongs in Austin now.

Nexus publishes a 100-point rubric. Creative Work is worth up to 35 points for an idea that reflects Austin’s people, places, histories or cultures and demonstrates intent, authenticity and perspective. Capacity is worth up to 35 points for relevant experience, relationships or cultural knowledge. Public Connection supplies the remaining 30 points.

Treat those three categories as the application outline. Use work samples and concise evidence to show the artistic idea, the team’s ability to deliver it and the audience relationship. A polished biography cannot replace a clearly described project, and a good project idea cannot replace proof that the applicant can execute it.

The Nexus page lists artist and administrator compensation, marketing and outreach, insurance, supplies, permits, venue or equipment rentals, and production, performance and service fees among eligible expenses. A fiscal-sponsor fee may be included but cannot exceed 10 percent of the award.

The same page excludes awardee travel, food and hospitality, fundraisers, startup costs, gifts or prizes, existing debts and equipment purchases or repairs. Build the budget from the published rules, keep each line tied to the public activity and avoid charging the same expense to more than one City grant.

Start with proof of at least one year of Austin creative production: dated releases, flyers, venue listings, press, contracts or other records that establish a public track record. Then choose work samples that match the proposed project instead of simply selecting the most popular material.

Draft the public-facing plan and budget in a separate document before entering the portal. Name the intended audience, Austin location, access plan, collaborators, milestones and measurable outcome. Create Austin also warns that only one complete application may be submitted per applicant per round, so settle the applicant entity and project lead before submission.
